PhD success for automotive engineer

Derek Braden was awarded a PhD from the General Engineering Research Institute for his doctoral research entitled: "Non-Destructive Evaluation of Solder Joint Reliability".
He is pictured here with his wife, Angela, who is also an LJMU graduate, having completed both the mechanical engineering undergraduate and masters degrees at the University.
Derek completed his research while working full-time at Delphi Automotive, one of the world's largest automotive parts manufacturers. He believes his latest promotion to European Manager was in part linked to his completing the PhD.
"LJMU, through part-time study has enabled me to go all the way from undergraduate to Masters and then PhD, while continuing to work for local industry. The opportunity to increase my technical knowledge and develop research skills has significantly helped my career."
"Undertaking a PhD is not a solitary activity, it's a team event, and I am privileged to have met and worked with some extremely talented people while having fun in the process," added Derek. "Today's ceremony is as much a celebration for me as it is recognition for all the support I have received from my wife, Delphi and the GERI team."
