Blackboard goes mobile - staff update

23 October 2012

Blackboard Mobile LearnChecking for updates on modules is now even easier. That's because Blackboard has just gone mobile at LJMU. The free Blackboard Mobile Learn app is available for Blackberry, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android and HP web OS devices.

LJMU has purchased Blackboard Mobile Learn in response to student feedback requesting this new service.

"Blackboard Mobile Learn means that you will be able to access course content, alerts, announcements and much more, virtually from anywhere and at any time," said Alice Bird, Academic Enhancement Unit.

"Students and staff will have access to a range of content already available on Blackboard direct from their mobile devices. We don't imagine that students will be reading lengthy documents on their phones but we do hope that they will use the app to keep up-to-date with announcements, to take part in blogs and other online discussions and to check notifications."

Alice continued: "Staff won't need any additional training on how to use the Blackboard app or have to rewrite or restructure existing materials, though we will be running sessions on how to make content more mobile friendly. The Blackboard app is about making existing information much more accessible. It will help staff engage quickly and more effectively with students by delivering personalised information direct to their smart phones."

Paul Abernethy, LiverpoolSU Vice President (Academic Quality) added: "LiverpoolSU is very excited about the potential of the Blackboard App and are delighted LJMU have invested in it. Giving students access to Blackboard functionality on the move should help improve student communication and ultimately improve the student experience."
