LJMU sports coaching awarded a new mark of excellence

Liverpool John Moores University has become one of only five institutions in the country, and the only one in the north west of England, to have its sports coaching course awarded a new mark of excellence.

The BA (Hons) Coaching Development degree run by the University's Centre for Sport, Dance and Outdoor Education has recently been accredited by Skills Active and Sports Coach UK. The Higher Education Endorsement means students undertaking the course are reaching professionally required standards, and improving their chances of employability within their chosen industry.

In order to become accredited by Skills Active and Sports Coach UK, the department had to demonstrate a balance of theoretical and practical experience. An external examiner visited the University to look at the facilities and course materials on offer to the students, staff from the department also talked about the programme content and some of its innovative modes of delivery.

As part of the BA (Hons) Coaching Development, students are given a general overview of methods and the application of coaching skills. To improve their knowledge and understanding, modules cover a range of multidisciplinary subjects including coaching pedagogy, applied training theory, performance analysis, sport psychology as well as a sociological and organisational view of coaching

The University works alongside national bodies of sport, to provide coaching qualifications which complement the overall degree. The Merseyside Sports Partnership and Liverpool City Council also work with the University to provide work placements and practical experience throughout the three years of study.
