Support for Care Leavers at LJMU

Liverpool John Moores University is committed to helping increase the number of care leavers that go on to study at university and there is a wide variety of support available to you should you decide to study with us. We have been awarded the Buttle UK Quality Mark, which recognises the “exemplary level of support” that we provide to students who have spent time in local authority care.
We will always respect your decision and your confidentiality so won’t share any of your information with anybody unless you want us to. We simply ask for this information to enable us to provide you with the most appropriate support for your needs.

What support is available to you?

Thinking about joining us here at LJMU?

If you’re thinking of joining us at LJMU, we are available to provide you with information and assist you in establishing what support, if any, you might require during your time at university. You can declare on your UCAS application and we would encourage you to do this. That way our dedicated Care Leaver contact, Phil Bakstad, can make contact with you shortly after you submit your application. Alternatively, your Leaving Care team can put you in touch with Phil or you can make contact yourself by calling 0151 231 8098 or emailing careleavers@ljmu.ac.uk.

Support during your studies

While you are studying at LJMU, a wide range of support is available to you to ensure that you make the most of your time with us. We understand that you may not want, or need, any extra support when you arrive and this might remain the case for the length of your studies. However, it’s important that you know just what is available, to enable you to make as informed a decision as possible.

Individual support through a dedicated member of staff Phil Bakstad is the dedicated member of staff for care leavers at LJMU, and is based in the Student Advice and Wellbeing team in the Aquinas Building. It is his role to support you with all aspects of student life at LJMU. This could include:

  • Working with you and your Leaving Care team to ensure a smooth transition to university and, when necessary, liaising with your Local Authority on your behalf;
  • Support with applying for student funding, including making an initial application and liaising with Student Finance England, and managing your money while at university;
  • Developing a package of support that suits your needs including support with Study Skills and a mentor, should you wish.
  • Support with academic issues including liaising with your academic department / course tutors.
  • Signposting towards other LJMU services such as the Graduate Development Centre and LiverpoolSU.
  • Applying for additional sources of funding such as the Access to Learning Fund and charitable trusts.
  • Or simply just someone to talk to if you need to.

We know that not everybody will require the same level or type of support so we will work with you to develop what’s right for you and review this as appropriate.

You can contact Phil via emailing careleavers@ljmu.ac.uk or telephoning 0151 231 8098. Alternatively, you can book an appointment via the Transaction Desks in each Learning Resource Centre.

Somewhere to live all year-round

365-day accommodation is available for you in LJMU partner accommodation, should you wish. If you require 365-day accommodation, it’s important that you mention this when booking your accommodation through the LJMU website. Alternatively, contact Phil Bakstad who can notify the Accommodation Office for you. Phil can also arrange for you to visit any partner accommodation you are interested in.

I’m not sure I want to live in student accommodation. What other options are available?

 Living in student accommodation is a good way to make friends at university but,  sometimes, students might prefer to live in a private house or flat-share. You can talk  through what other accommodation options are available with Phil Bakstad or, if need  be, Phil can book you an appointment with the University’s Accommodation Adviser.
 Liverpool Student Homes holds a full list of suitable properties for LJMU students.  You can view available properties on their website www.lsh.liv.ac.uk or get further  information by telephoning on 0151 794 3296.

The John Lennon Imagine Award – a yearly bursary of a minimum of £1,000

The John Lennon Imagine Award is a non-repayable bursary available to LJMU students who are care leavers, are estranged from their families or ex-foyer residents. This is in addition to the financial support you will receive from your local authority and Student Finance England.

This is available for each year of your course, on attending a yearly-update meeting. You will need to provide evidence of your status as a Care Leaver – a letter from your Personal Adviser / Social Worker / Pathway Worker is ideal.

The Buttle UK Quality Mark

LJMU is proud to have been awarded the Buttle UK Quality Mark, in recognition of our commitment to supporting Care Leavers and Looked After Children.

The commitment to Care Leavers covers the following areas:

  • Working with looked after young people and local authorities to increase the number of care leavers entering higher education;
  • Raising awareness of the needs of care leavers entering higher education.
  • Enabling care leavers to make the most of their time at university and to complete their course successfully.
  • Contributing to a national framework to fulfill their obligations to care leavers.
