Banking on a successful future

Professor Madjid Merabti, Director of the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences with Colin Dyson, Barclays Head of Global Infrastructure Capacity PlanningThe School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences welcomed Colin Dyson and Louise Corbally from Barclays' Unix Infrastructure team based in Knutsford to the University to discuss future collaborative opportunities.

As part of the visit, Barclays kindly donated a new IBM P5 Enterprise Server to the School for use by students and staff in both research and teaching. This highly specified machine features four 64-bit POWER5 processors, each with 1.9 MB of L2 cache and 36 MB of off-chip L3 cache, 16 GB of main memory, eight 73 GB hot-swappable SCSI drives, redundant power supplies, fibre-channel network controller and SCSI tape drive.

The introduction of this new machine illustrates how the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences is meeting the requirements of employers in the region by equipping graduates with relevant industry skills. Students studying within the School can now use the new machine to learn Unix and AIX skills relevant to the banking industry and practice using the same equipment that they will find in the workplace upon graduation.

The School already has a very positive relationship with Barclays through the provision of year-long student placements at both the Radbroke Hall site in Cheshire and Poole in Dorset. Barclays have recently appointed a further three of the School's students on placement for the coming academic year.

Colin Dyson commented on how impressed they have been by the professionalism and range of skills demonstrated by LJMU students and discussed plans to increase opportunities for student placements within Barclays in the coming years.

The School has a number of research projects that are also of potential interest to Barclays. As a result of this meeting, a new working group will be set up to discuss future opportunities between CMS staff and Barclays development and infrastructure teams on a regular basis in areas such as PhD sponsorship, industrial collaboration and commercial IP exploitation.
