Mobile tourism
Professor Madjid Merabti and Dr Bob Askwith have been awarded a grant of €100,000 to work on a two year European project to develop Tourist Information Systems for Mobile Computing users. The project is coordinated by a team from Portugal with additional members from Spain, France and Ireland. The work aims to deploy a working tourist information system that supports a technology known as Location-Based Services (LBS). Using LBS a mobile phone is aware of its location and can query the tourist information system for local sites of interest, without the user needing to know the location.
