Course overview

The programme will equip you with a range of skills and techniques appropriate for companies working in the field of advanced manufacturing. It is these skills that will allow you to make an immediate contribution to a company's manufacturing capability and operation, and to ultimately progress into senior management positions.

This programme builds on the experience developed with undergraduate BEng Manufacturing Engineering. It provides a progression route for graduates from the programme, as well as other relevant programmes in mechanical and manufacturing engineering.

The course is designed for graduates wishing to reach senior positions as engineers and technical managers in manufacturing process engineering, with particular emphasis on advanced manufacturing technologies and the application of advanced materials. In addition, it covers quality engineering, logistics and management skills.  Optional modules include alternative energy systems, financial management and automated non-contact measurement.

Our postgraduates are highly sought after by employers and many occupy senior positions within major UK and international companies. We want to help you reach your potential and this course will develop both the technical and managerial skills you need to succeed in your chosen career.

The School has an excellent record of high quality application-oriented research and knowledge transfer to business. It is home to internationally recognised research groups Electrical Electronic Engineering Research Centre (Prof J Zhang, Prof E. Levi), the Liverpool Logistics Offshore and Marine Research Institute (Prof J. Wang), Materials and Structures Research Group (Prof J Ren, Prof I Jones) and GERI (Prof Burton).

Employment and careers

As well as the obvious manufacturing and technical roles, manufacturing engineers are employed to support both sales and marketing, as well as reaching positions of technical, managerial and commercial leadership. Positions in both small and large companies require a good technical understanding and strong interpersonal skills. This programme is widely recognised by employers as meeting these requirements. This also enables graduates to be employed by consultancies, government bodies and public utilities.

As a postgraduate student you will be able to take full advantage of the extensive range of advice and guidance available in our World of Work Careers Centre, including our Ready for Work training courses, which cover everything from interview skills to preparing for assessment centre tests.

LJMU also has a dedicated Centre for Entrepreneurship, offering business advice and start-up funding, to students and graduates interested in setting up their own companies or working freelance.

Our World of Work Programme – endorsed by FTSE 100 companies and leading business organisations – offers you the chance to get an additional certificate proving to potential employers that you have the skills and experience they are looking for. No other university in the UK or internationally, offers students the chance to develop these skills and organisations backing the scheme include the Confederation of British Industry, United Utilities, Sony, Siemens, Peugeot Citroen and Marks and Spencer.
