Liverpool Screen School
Centre for Writing
The Centre for Writing offers a Single and Joint Honours BA in Imaginative Writing, MAs in Writing and Screenwriting, and MPhil and PhD programmes. Its team of tutor-writers includes published poets, novelists, short story writers, screenwriters, and writers for stage and radio. Their teaching methods at BA level are outlined in The Writer's Workbook (Arnold, 2000; 2004). The Centre for Writing also publishes Pool (Headland, 2000; 2003) and Poetry Pool (Headland, 2003), guest-edited anthologies of short fiction and poetry which include contributions from its undergraduates, postgraduates, staff and associate tutors.
The Lynda La Plante competition for the best 50-minute screenplay (prize £2,000) is administered by Centre for Writing staff, and is open to all its students. The Centre is also affiliated to a London literary agency. Its Visiting Professor is currently Barry Unsworth, and its Visiting Writer is Bernard Mac Laverty. The Centre has recently been awarded a grant by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation for Free to Write, its scheme for developing Life Writing and Reading in UK prisons.
