Minister for Crime Prevention James Brokenshire who made the announcement last week, said:
"I am pleased to welcome the chair and new members to the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs and look forward to working with them over the coming years. As we made clear in the 2010 Drug Strategy, high quality advice in this field is essential. The ACMD is an integral and valuable part of the Government’s approach to tackling the harms caused by drug misuse. The independent advice provided by the ACMD helps to protect us from the real dangers posed by illicit drug use."
Professor Mark Bellis, OBE, Director of Centre for Public Health commented:
"The substance use team at the Centre for Public Health is undertaking important research on alcohol and drugs across Merseyside and across Europe. We are delighted that a senior member of the team has been appointed to this important Government committee."
The ACMD was established under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It is the duty of the ACMD to keep drugs misuse in the United Kingdom under review and to advise the Government on measures for preventing misuse and social problems arising from it.
