Update: Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2010 at LJMU

Student PCs
Over the summer a Windows 7 (32 bit) version of the student PC client will be rolled out across all student PCs including the Learning Resource Centres at Aldham Robarts, Avril Robarts and IM Marsh and the IT Centres in Byrom St and the John Foster Building. From the start of the new academic year in September 2011 all student PCs will be running Windows 7. The Windows 7 client will include the latest version of Microsoft Office, Office 2010.

Staff PCs
From September 2011 Windows 7 with Office 2010 will be available on staff managed and flexible clients on request. It will be gradually phased in on all staff PCs over the next 18 months or so.



Office 2010
Office 2010 will be the version of Office included on the new Windows 7 clients at LJMU. Office 2010 uses the same file formats as Office 2007, so there should be relatively few compatibility issues. Office 2010 is already available from the staff download pages for use on home PCs or laptops. If you would like to try out Office 2010 you can download it from here:

Applications Software
Many hundreds of software packages are currently available on the managed staff and student XP clients under the JMU Applications/Subject Software menu. PLN staff will be testing all software which is used regularly and transferring it to the new Windows 7 client. However, many of these software packages are old and little used, so if you are a member of academic staff and use specific Subject Software with your students, it would be very helpful if you could phone the helpdesk on extension 5555 to let us know whether or not you will require this to be available under Windows 7.

Off-Campus Applications Service
A new version of the Citrix Off-Campus Applications Service which includes Office 2010 will also be available from September 2011 and will replace the current version.
