LJMU student honoured in national property competition
21 April 2011
A Liverpool John Moores University student is one of two young women who recently scooped important prizes in a national property industry competition, the Association of Women in Property (WiP) National Student Awards.
Gillian Lysons, who is studying Real Estate Management and Business has been given the North West Highly Commended accolade, narrowly missing the top regional Award, which went to Charlotte Robinson studying Architecture at Manchester School of Art.
Claire Beaumont, Chairman of WiP’s North West Branch and a solicitor with Laytons, said
"This is a tough Awards process, when we ask the best degree students from across the region to compete against each other, with a panel interview in front of the judges, to win a place in the national Final. Gillian and Charlotte have done exceptionally well just to get this far and, armed with the experience these Awards bring, will be well equipped to make their mark on the industry. They are among the industry’s future stars".
"It’s great that a competition like this exists as it highlights the careers available in the property industry and the opportunities for women. I’m really thrilled to be recognised in this way and would like to thank the judges".
The National Student Awards are now in their fifth year. Open to female, second year students studying a Built Environment degree course, students are nominated by their institutions with only the very best getting to this stage. The National Student Awards are this year sponsored in the North West by property consultants, Fisher Wilson and nationally by construction firm Byrne Group and international property advisers Jones Lang La Salle.
The Association of Women in Property is committed to redressing the balance of female under-representation in the property and construction industry by encouraging and supporting women throughout their careers and nurturing newcomers. The National Property Awards are part of a programme which also includes peer mentoring, CPD and training seminars and regular networking opportunities.
Continuing in its aim to recognise excellence among women in the property and construction industry, nominations are now open for the Property Industry Woman of the Year, sponsored by Women in Property North West. Contenders can nominate themself or a colleague at http://www.forwardladies.com/award-judging-criteria. Deadline for nominations is 31st May. The Women in Business Awards North West will be held on Friday 23 September 2011 at The Midland Hotel, Manchester.
