In Memoriam

05 May 2011

It is with great sadness that LJMU has learnt of the death of David Ovenden. David passed away at his home over the Easter weekend, aged 55 years. David worked in the Library and Student Support team, within Business and Information Systems and was the Team Leader responsible for Acquisitions. Colleagues may know David through his involvement in the NoWAL consortial purchasing agreements or through work associated with acquisitions and finance. He had worked at LJMU for over 30 years and was a friend to many and a highly respected and valued colleague.

David moved from his family home in Kent in 1980 to join what was then the Liverpool Polytechnic as a Cataloguer in the Central Services Unit of the library. In the intervening years David held a number of posts including, Assistant Librarian in the newly formed Business and Management Library, Serials Librarian at Byrom Street and Stock Editor based at Walton House. Colleagues who worked closely with David never failed to comment on his professional commitment, encyclopaedic knowledge and the high standards of work he set for himself. Those who met him would invariably comment on his great sense of humour and fun – David could always be relied upon to lighten any mood with something witty.

Outside of work David was a close follower of cricket and had a passion for steam trains - he often spoke enthusiastically about the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in his home town of New Romney. For all his Kentish roots David had made Liverpool his home these past 30 years and he will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts are with David’s family and friends at this very difficult time. The funeral service will be held on 11 May, at 10.45am, at Wessex Vale Crematorium, Southampton. David’s family have asked for family flowers only but that donations may be made in his memory to Diabetes UK. A collection will be organised on behalf of his colleagues. If you wish to donate please contact Rebecca Mallinson (details below) or visit the Aquinas Building reception area.

An informal memorial tribute, in remembrance of David, will be held by LJMU in the Roscoe Room, 2 Rodney Street, between 10.30am and 12.00noon on Tuesday 17 May. If you would like to attend please contact Rebecca Mallinson, by Friday 13 May, on ext. 3544 or email:
