LJMU Formula student team wins IMechE award

The School of Engineering’s Formula Student Racing Team has received one of four awards worth £2,500 from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The completion was open to all 90 teams taking part in this year’s Silverstone Formula Student event. Formula Student is the Europe’s biggest educational motorsport event. The competition promotes careers and excellence in engineering by challenging university students from all over the World to design, build, develop, market and compete as a team with a single seater racing car.

The team were judged on their business and project plans and team profile for the IMechE award.

This year’s LJMU Formula Student Team is led and managed by Zhivko Staynov, who commented: "The new 2011 car is nearing completion and this award has given us a great deal of encouragement at this critical time."

2010 marked the LJMU team’s first year of entry into the competition. They managed to achieve 6th place in the UK rankings, putting them 133rd out of 475 in the world rankings.
