Agency Workers Regulations

The Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) 2010 is new UK legislation which comes into force on 1 October 2011.

The aim of the AWR is to protect temporary agency workers by ensuring through legislation that they have a right to equal treatment in basic working and employment conditions, as if they were employed on a permanent basis after 12 weeks service in the same job. The implementation of the regulations will have major implications on the costs and use of agency workers.

In addition, from the 1 October 2011, agency workers will also be entitled to access certain University facilities and information on job vacancies from day one of their assignment with the University.
The AWR does not, however, change the employment status of agency workers.

Managers who require short-term agency cover should familiarise themselves with the document 'Employing Temporary Agency Workers – A Managers Guide' found on the HR Website which provides an overview of the scope and application of the AWR and should seek the advice of their HR Adviser.
