End of Life Care for Dementia Sufferers: Research Successes
A cross faculty LJMU project, completed for Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authority in 2008, is still providing successes for a number of the research team involved.
The 6th UK Dementia Conference, currently being held in the BT Convention Centre Liverpool, saw two refereed presentations from original team members, one as a direct result of the project and another as an extension of the original project. Four members of the original LJMU project team presented a paper on the Cost Benefits of End of Life Care Training, whilst three of the four were included on a spin-off research presentation on Advanced Care Planning for Caregivers and Relatives of people with Dementia. Both papers were also included in the first volume of BMJ Supportive and Palliative Care Journal.
Since the original report in 2008, which has informed the national agenda and UK strategy for Dementia, the team has seen outputs which include four refereed publications, seven refereed UK conference papers and one refereed International conference paper. The project work has also resulted in spin-off research work for Susan Ashton, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences, who has developed and built on the original project work for PhD.
Bob McClelland, a Reader from the Liverpool Business School in the Centre for Public Service Management, who led the original project between 2006/08 commented:
"We, the team, are delighted that the original project has shown sustainability and forward relevance with its outcomes. The research work addresses a growing social issue; has generated income for LJMU; demonstrated regional and national impacts; excellent research outputs; it has extended cross Faculty and Strategic Health Authority collaboration to cross university collaborations and it has provided excellent staff development opportunities."
