LJMU student finance event: praised by pupils and parents
18 November 2011
Over 200 prospective students and parents from the Merseyside area attended the first LJMU Information Evening, held to mark National Student Finance Day last Monday 14 November.
Hosted in the Art and Design Academy by LJMU’s Outreach Team and Student Advice and Wellbeing, the event provided clarity on the changes in tuition fees and funding for students applying to University in 2012 or beyond.
National Student Finance Day was organised by The Independent Taskforce on Student Finance, to dispel misconceptions about student debt and to put into perspective some of the recent media coverage regarding university tuition fees.
Martin Lewis, head of the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information and founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, said:
"The perception of student loan debt in 2012 is hugely misunderstood. Many students, especially from lower income families are unnecessarily being put off. We need to ensure they understand how it really works so they can make an informed choice."
The Outreach Team organised this hugely successful event to enable local students to make informed decisions about their future, whilst providing them with vital information on the university application process and the benefits of progressing into Higher Education.
Lynne Condell, Student Funds Manager at LJMU (and Chair of the National Association of Student Money Advisors) added:
"Many young people are worried by the forthcoming changes in Higher Education, so the aim of the event was to reach out to prospective students and their parents and help them understand the implications of the changes in a clear and simple way. I really feel like the majority of attendees went away with a much clearer and hopefully more positive picture of what is available for those that are planning to study in 2012."
A parent attending the event commented:
"I have been doing some research online, but the presentation was a real help. I’m now aware of exactly what support is available to us."
The Student Recruitment and Widening Access Team will be delivering a whole range of activities during the coming academic year in order to support progression to Higher Education. Details of events will be available on the LJMU Open Day pages here.
