A New Name for the Graduate Development Centre
13 January 2012
Before the start of this academic year Corporate Communications conducted a piece of market research with prospective students, their parents and a selected employer group. One of the aims of the research was to gain a better understanding of the perception of the World of Work programme and employability at LJMU.
The feedback revealed that young people, students, employers and parents thought the services offered by the Graduate Development Centre were invaluable and, to that end, they felt the name of the Centre could more explicitly reflect its outstanding work.
Terry Dray, Director of Graduate Advancement and Employer Engagement comments:
"As a result of the research, and work that we have been undertaking with Michele Ibbs and the Students' Union on how we communicate with prospective and current students, the Senior Management Group recently agreed to evolve the terminology we use to describe employability and career development provision.
"The Graduate Development Centre will be renamed the World of Work Careers Centre. We will take a phased approach to introduce the new name. My team will now start to make the significant necessary changes to incorporate the new title. This may take some time but all work should be complete by the start of the 2012/13 academic year."
In order to avoid unnecessary expenditure in changing the name mid-way through the academic year, materials currently in circulation will remain unchanged. All materials in development to support the recruitment cycle, the open day, enrolment for 2012 and new student material will use the term World of Work in full and not the acronym WoW.
By 1 September, all reference to WoW and the GDC, in printed form and on the web, should be replaced with the new title, this includes module and programme handbooks as well as guides and support materials developed in Faculties and Services areas.
