LJMU Sport Scholarship students compete at Olympic facilities
31 May 2012
LJMU Sport Science student Matthew Lee has gained valuable experience after being called up to join the GB Handball team in a Camp at the Olympic Arena.
Matthew was subsequently selected to represent GB for a preparation tournament against Argentina, Tunisia and South Korea.
"I had no idea that I was going to be selected, I got my first cap against Tunisia, getting a run out 5 minutes from time, and it has been an excellent experience."
Sport Scholarship student Nick Giles was also chosen to play in a GB Hockey game at a test event in the Riverbank Arena Olympic facility.
"The facilities are the best I have ever seen and played in, it was great to play in the event before the Olympic Games start."
Nick has also been given the privilege of being an Olympic Torch Bearer. Nick's leg of this event starts at 11.25am on Friday 1 June, when the torch will be carried in Formby, from Altcar Road/Burlington Avenue, then Liverpool Road and onto Lighthouse Lane where it will be taken onwards to Crosby for the next leg of its journey.
"It was a great surprise to be chosen but I am over the moon, I will do my best to take it all in."
LJMU Sport Scholarship Manager, David McDermott added:
"It has been a busy couple of months for our Sport Scholars. We have also had Abi Fitzpatrick, Osian Jones, Daniel Mooney and Daniel Needham representing LJMU at the British University and College Sports national track and field event at the new Olympic stadium last month - they all made it to their respective finals. The Sport Scholarship students have received some valuable support over the past couple of months from their LJMU sports mentors and tutors in assisting them with balancing their academic and sporting commitments."
