Student engagement takes centre stage

01 June 2012

Director of the Academic Enhancement Unit (AEU), Jackie Gresham, hopes the turnout to this year's two-day Teaching and Learning Conference on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 June and explains will exceed all others.

Jackie said: "There are many, many good things happening at the University and yet there often isn't a chance to get together to talk about them. This is an excellent opportunity to take time out from your schedules to meet people outside your Schools and Faculties and hear about, share and discuss good practice in teaching and learning. To make it easier for everyone to attend, this year's event is taking place at the Art and Design Academy and we are hoping this more central location will attract yet more academics and teaching and learning support staff.

"Increasing student engagement and developing a partnership approach to teaching and learning will be crucial for the continued success of LJMU. In light of that, student engagement is the theme of this year’s conference and we have an expert in that field coming to give us his views on the subject.

"Professor Paul Trowler, Research Director at Lancaster University's Department for Educational Research, is well-known within the sector for student engagement and was therefore an obvious choice to ask to be the conference's first keynote speaker.

"Many of our own staff, from across all Faculties, are also presenting during the conference, discussing various topics such as how Facebook can be used as a tool in Higher Education and the importance of Student Progression Officers with regards to student retention. Several of them are also presenting with students, which is a very positive step as it demonstrates student engagement in action.

"In addition, Professor Roger Webster, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies, Professor Peter Wheeler, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Professor Diana Burton, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic Enhancement, Research and Regional Engagement will be on a panel to discuss the 2012 offer. Collaborative partners are also taking part in the event, with LIPA and Stockport College delivering two of the sessions.

"The event will be opened by Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Weatherill and he will also be announcing this year's Learning and Teaching Award winners who will receive their awards during Graduation."
