Mainstreaming Co-operation Conference

15 June 2012

LJMU Head of History Dr Tony Webster will be speaking at the Mainstreaming Co-operation Conference in Manchester on Tuesday 3rd July.  The conference has been organised by The Co-operative College and a team of researchers from Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Liverpool, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Central Lancashire, Edge Hill University and the University of the Basque Country.

Dr Webster’s session will cover his research into ‘The CWS and Fred Lambert, 1956-1970: an unsung visionary?’. This looks at the work of a little known but important Co-operative manager whose work was to dramatically influence the Co-operative Movement in the long term.  Dr Webster is working with a team of historians from the University of Liverpool on two major books looking at co-operative values and the history of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, one of which will showcase the Co-operative Group as a business model. This will be the first major business history of the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS)/Co-operative Group in time for the society’s 150th anniversary in 2013.

The Mainstreaming Co-operation Conference will explore how co-operatives in every sphere of life can emerge globally as a mainstreaming alternative for the 21st century. There are distinguished keynote speakers, a visit to the newly refurbished Rochdale Pioneers Museum and a conference at the magnificent Victorian Town Hall in Rochdale. A wide range of papers will be presented on the following themes: education, history, governance, innovation, gender and global traditions.

Venue: The Lancaster Suite, New Century House, Manchester (M60 4ES).
Conference fees: £150 for the full three days (including conference dinner and transport to and from Rochdale), £135 for the full Conference without the dinner and £70 for one day.

A limited number of bursaries (up to half the conference fee) are available for postgraduates.
