Criminal Convictions

LJMU Criminal Convictions Policy and Procedure

Criminal convictions are not a bar to study at LJMU, but the University does insist upon students disclosing any relevant unprotected convictions that might impact upon study at the University. The University will assess an application from a person with relevant unprotected convictions in the light of the assessed risk to other students, to staff, and to University property.

Whilst criminal convictions will not automatically preclude students from all courses, it is important to note that failure to disclose a relevant criminal conviction that later comes to light, may result in a place being withdrawn or a student being required to leave the University before having completed their studies.  All disclosures regarding criminal records will be considered under the LJMU Criminal Convictions Procedure.

Some professional programmes and modules are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and students may be asked to disclose all unprotected convictions, cautions, reprimands, criminal charges and pending cases regardless of date.

Some professional programmes or modules may require students to undertake a criminal records check. This involves completing a Disclosure and Barring Service Form (for which there may be a charge) and the production of documents to verify the student's identity. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) then processes the form and you will be required to show this to LJMU. The DBS form is then considered by the relevant Criminal Convictions Panel.

Any information provided by students in relation to Criminal Convictions declarations will be treated in strict confidence, securely maintained and disclosed only to specific individuals who require this information as part of their duties. This information will be stored separately from the student’s academic record.

For further information on the Criminal Convictions Policy please contact Student Governance. Any student who is in doubt as to whether they will require a criminal convictions check should check with Student Governance.
