What are cookies?

How we use cookies

The University website uses cookies in two ways:
  1. To retain user preferences - for example, cookies stored by your web browser help us to recognise you if you return to our site at a later stage. This can save you time on future visits by storing information you may have previously entered onto our site.
  2. 2. Collect website usage information via Google Analytics – we anonymously track how visitors interact with the University website, including where they came from and what they did whilst on our website. This is then used by us to provide a better online experience. We do not track users once they leave the University website.

multiple cookies with names beginning 'ASPSESSIONID...'  These cookies are used for service provision and performance. Expires once the session has ended.
LJMUPreferences  This cookie stores your analytics tracking preference while browsing the the LJMU Website Set on arrival, expires after 1 year.
LJMU_Courses_Selector_1   This cookie helps with navigating the courses area of our website by remembering the kind of course you have searched for, for example Undergraduate or Postgraduate. Expires after two weeks.

 These cookies are used to collect information about how visitors use our site. We use the information to help us improve the site. The cookies collect information in an anonymous form, including the number of visitors to the site, where visitors have come to the site from and the pages they visited.  _utma expires after two years, _utmb expires 30 minutes after the session has ended, _utmc expires once the session has ended and _utmz expires after 6 months.

Third party cookies

We sometimes embed photo and video content from websites like YouTube. Webpages with this embedded content may set cookies from these websites. Similarly, when you use a share button a cookie may be set by the service you have chosen to share content through. LJMU does not control the transmission of these cookies and cannot block cookies from those websites. You should check the relevant third party website for more information on their privacy policy.

Managing cookies

If you wish to control what cookies you use, you can change your internet browser setting at any time.  However, please note that in disabling cookies, some website functionality may be lost.
