Funding or NHS students who started in 2011/12 or earlier

Students on NHS-funded courses are funded differently to other students. If you have any queries, please contact Student Advice.

As a general rule providing that you have not been funded by the NHS before and you meet the residence rules, you will receive a non-repayable bursary to cover your day-to-day living costs. In addition the NHS will pay your tuition fees.

The information here is only intended as a guide outlining the range of funding available to students on NHS-funded courses. For more information, contact Student Advice: studentadvice@ljmu.ac.uk or go to the NHS website: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/students

NHS Bursaries for BA or BSc (degree) students

  • If you are continuing on an NHS funded BA or BSc course then you must apply for a means tested NHS bursary. The NHS will look at your parents' or partner's income when they assess your bursary.

  • NHS bursaries do not have to be repaid.

  • They are paid monthly.

  • Eligibility is based on your residency (where you have lived) and the course you are studying and if you have been funded previously.

  • You need to reapply for your bursary each year.

  • In addition to the NHS bursary, students with children can apply for means tested grants for their dependants and a childcare grant.

  • You can also apply for practice placement and expenses

  • If you have an ongoing health issue or disability you may also qualify for disabled students allowance.

  • Students attending a BA (degree) course can also apply for a reduced rate Student Loan. This reduced rate loan for NHS students is not means tested.  It is repaid at the end of your course once you are earning £15,000.  To apply for a loan, log on to www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

  • EU students who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of their course, or who have EEA migrant worker status may be eligible for the full NHS Bursary. EU students who do not meet either of these criteria may still be eligible for a Fees Only award.

Students on NHS Diploma courses (Dip HE)

  • If you are on a Dip He course you can receive a non means tested NHS bursary.  The NHS will not look at your household income when they assess you for your bursary.

  • NHS bursaries do not have to be repaid.

  • They are paid monthly.

  • Unless you are ‘seconded’ diploma students cannot have a student loan.

  • EU students who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of their course, or who have EEA migrant worker status may be eligible for the full NHS Bursary. EU students who do not meet either of these criteria may still be eligible for a Fees Only award.
