Faculty of Science

Pascale Kippelen is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Sport & Exercise Science, with an expertise in Respiratory Physiology. Pascale joined the School of Sport & Exercise Sciences at LJMU in 2024. Prior to LJMU, she worked for 16 years at Brunel University London as: Reader (2020-2024); Senior Lecturer (2008-2020); and Lecturer (2005-2008). During her tenure at Brunel, she served as: Co-Director of the Centre for Physical Activity in Health and Disease (2022-2024); Deputy to the Divisional Lead in Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences (2018-2022); and Co-Director of Undergraduate Studies in Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences (2016-2020).

Pascale’s background is as Exercise and Respiratory Physiologist interested in the health of different human populations, from elite athletes to clinical groups. She attained her undergraduate degree in Sport & Exercise Sciences (Human Performance) at the University of Strasbourg, France, then went on to complete an MSc and a PhD in Exercise and Respiratory Physiology at the University of Montpellier, France. This was followed by 1 ½ years of post-doctoral training at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Australia, under the supervision of Dr Sandra D Anderson. There, Pascale carried out research on the pathophysiology of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, as well as participated to Phase 3 of the Clinical Trial for Aridole/Osmohale® (an indirect osmotic bronchial challenge test that assists in the diagnosis and management of asthma). On return to Europe, she held an academic position at the University of Aberdeen for 3 yrs. (2005-2008).

Performance art: music, dance, drama, etc., City dwellers and athletes, Associate Scientist, Invisible Dust, Pascale was an Associate Scientist to ‘Invisible Dust’ – a high-profile project run ahead of the 2012 London Olympics by curator Alice Sharp and jointly funded by The Wellcome Trust and the Arts Council England (Faisal Abdu'Allah - Double Pendulum - Invisible Dust). The project involved outreach activities with young people from East London, as well as a collaboration with the prominent British artist, Faisal Abdu’Allah; this led to the creation of ‘Double Pendulum’, a film that explored the effects of pollution on the respiratory health of athletes. The film was screened as part of the CREATE11 festival at the ViewTube, in June 2012. It subsequently won the prestigious Lord Mayor of London ‘Sustainability City’ award for ‘Air Quality’, https://invisibledust.com/projects/faisal-abduallah-double-pendulum/. 2012
