Probing the Galactic Potential and Accretion History with Stellar Streams
Sergey Koposov (Edinburgh)
This event has already taken place. In the last 20 years, a large number of stellar streams - structures created bydisrupted dwarf galaxies and globular clusters - have been discovered around the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies. In this talk, I will describe what these streams can tell us about the accretion history of the Milky Way, the gravitational potential, how it changes over time, and the distribution of dark matter in our Galaxy and M31. Also in my talk I will touch upon the impact of large spectroscopic surveys such as DESI will have on mapping the Galactic potential.
