After graduating from the Graphic Arts BA (Hons) at LJMU in 2001 I went on to continue my studies on the Communication Art and Design MA at the Royal Collage of Art in London. Whilst there I continued to pursue my interest in publication design and collaborative projects as well as exploring filmmaking and taking part in various branding projects.
I have studied and produced work at various levels, and in various capacities in the field of graphic design and illustration, including design work, arts projects and projects with primary school pupils enabling them to explore and create artwork. I have taught on various arts courses at different levels in the northwest and completed my PGCE (Post Compulsory) teaching qualification in 2011.
After teaching on the Graphic Design and Illustration BA (Hons) programme (formerly the Graphic Arts BA) for many years as a Sessional Lecturer, and as an Associate Lecturer on the Graphic Design course at MMU, I became a full time lecturer for LJMU in 2011. I currently teach across all three levels and I am the level 4 Leader as well as the Module Leader for two level 4 modules.
As a designer my interest has always been drawn by typography and page layout. I have a long-standing interest in publication design and print production which provides a useful, and flexible, medium for the exploration of my broader interests – both within the disciplines of the Graphic Arts and thematically.
My interests also include other areas of graphic design such as; experimental typography / typeface design, Photography and Print Design / Production. Over recent years I have produced several experimental typefaces and typographic systems, which explore the use of type as a generative (often abstract) system in response to text.
My current activities, in conjunction with my colleague Chris Jackson, investigate the crossover and influences between publication design and print production, and digital technology, specifically mobile and tablet. They deal with a number of areas such as design and formatting, user interaction and delivery mechanisms and raise some interesting questions concerning; the production, delivery, uses and value of content when encountered as a digital artefact.
