Students with dependants
Additional financial support
Please note
This information relates to UK undergraduate students only.
If you have child or adult dependants you could apply for additional financial support. If you are not sure about what or how to claim, then please contact us. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to get one or more of the following:
Childcare Grant
A childcare grant could cover up to 85% of your childcare costs during term time and holidays. This grant is means-tested and only available to full-time undergraduates or PGCE students. You can apply for this funding when you apply for your student finance (or later if you arrange your childcare at a later date). To apply, download the application form from your student funding body:
- Student Awards Agency Scotland
- Student Finance England
- Student Finance Northern Ireland
- Student Finance Wales
Parents' Learning Allowance
The parent’s learning allowance is a source of funding that can help towards the cost of being a parent. This allowance is means-tested and only available to full-time undergraduates or PGCE students. You will be assessed for this funding at the same time as you are assessed for your student finance. Therefore you do not need to make a separate application for the parent's learning allowance.
Adult Dependants' Grant
The adult dependants' grant is for students who have an adult who is financially dependent. This would normally be your partner. You will be assessed for this funding at the same time as you are assessed for your student finance. Therefore you do not need to make a separate application for the adult dependants' grant.
LJMU Student Support Fund
The LJMU Student Support Fund can be used to help alleviate unexpected financial hardship. The fund is available to full and part-time students.
Child benefit and child tax credits
Students with children can still claim Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits (or Universal Credits). This is available to both full and part-time students.
