1. LJMU shortlisted for six nominations at education awards

   LJMU has been shortlisted in six categories at the Educate North Awards 2016 to be held on Thursday 21st April in Manchester.

2. Women in STEM lecture series: Chi Onwurah MP

   In 1984, there were 14 per cent of female graduates in engineering and technology courses. In 2015, there was still only 14 per cent of female graduates in engineering courses. This sad statistic formed the basis of an impactful lecture by Chi Onwurah MP about the gender imbalance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Technology (STEM) subjects and subsequent careers.

3. World’s obese population hits 640 million

   More than one in ten men and one in seven women across the globe are now obese, according to the world’s biggest obesity study.

4. Move over Sir Alan Sugar: Graduate start-ups on the rise at LJMU

   The number of active Graduate Start Ups are still on the rise at LJMU according to the latest annual Higher Education – Business and Community Interaction survey (HE-BCI).

5. Panama welcomes LJMU at world-famous canal launch

   A Liverpool delegation including Eddie Blanco-Davis, from LJMU’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology flew to Panama at the behest of the UK embassy in Panama to attend the official launch of the £3.9bn expansion of the Panama Canal.

6. Study shows impact on emotional reactions

   Researchers from LJMU and the University of Liverpool have conducted a study examining the effect ecstasy has on different parts of the brain.

7. 25 years of nursing at LJMU

   A year before Liverpool Polytechnic became Liverpool John Moores University, another major change happened at the institution. In April 1991, the Liverpool School of Nursing and Midwifery amalgamated with the Poly, laying the foundations for today’s School of Nursing and Allied Health.

8. Revealing 100-year global height study

   Dutch men and Latvian women are the tallest on the planet, according to the largest ever study of height around the world. The research group, which included LJMU’s Dr Lynne Boddy, conducted the study using data from most countries in the world, tracking the height of young adult men and women between 1914 and 2014.
