1. First Step Spring Internships available for Level 4 students

   A new pilot internship programme for first year students (level 4 only) with little to no previous work experience launched on Monday 15 January and close at midnight on Sunday 4 February. There will be no interview process for these opportunities, the Student Futures team will undertake a matching process between participating organisations and students. The internships will begin on Monday 4 March (start dates may vary for each role).

2. In memoriam: Professor David R. Burton

   It is with great sadness that the university has learned of the passing of Professor David R. Burton.

3. Initiative to put nature in planning policy recognised

   A key initiative to put nature at the centre of planning policy across the Liverpool City Region has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

4. Domestic abuse: better safeguarding can aid prosecution

   New research suggests domestic abuse victims are better served by schemes which prioritise safeguarding over prosecution.

5. Supporting Science and Engineering Innovation

   LJMU has received a £5 million share of HEFCE’s £200 million funding scheme to support an increase in high-quality science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.

6. LJMU to lead British Council funded partnership to strengthen ties with Malaysia

   Liverpool John Moores University has been chosen as the Consortium Secretariat of a new Going Global Partnership, funded by the British Council, with Malaysia. The new collaboration aims to promote strategic engagement and bilateral cooperation in higher education between partner institutions in both countries.

7. Exploring the relationship between radio and heavy rock and metal music

   International scholars and practitioners came together to discuss the theme at the inaugural Heavy Metal on the Airwaves symposium organised by LJMU researcher and lecturer Dr Nadim Hassan.

8. LJMU train 40 Mersey Care matrons and nurses in anticipatory and advanced care planning

   Helping patients across Merseyside to be involved in the planning of their future treatment and care.

9. University welcomes national drive for social mobility

   Liverpool John Moores University has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing social mobility, as Universities UK (UUK) publishes a report by the Social Mobility Taskforce, which makes national recommendations for boosting access to higher education.
