1. Graduation review Thursday 12 July

   The morning saw graduations from Maritime and Mechanical Engineering, the Astrophysics Research Institute, Electronics and Electrical Engineering and the School of Nursing and Allied Health. In the afternoon Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering and Technology Research Institute, Civil Engineering and Built Environment all celebrated their graduations.

2. Astronomers catch Tatooine multiple star system as it forms

   For the first time astronomers, including Dr Richard Parker, of the Astrophysics Research Institute at LJMU, have caught a multiple-star system as it is created, and their observations are providing new insight into how such systems, and possibly the solar system, are formed. The amazing images taken from a series of telescopes on Earth show clouds of gas which are in the process of developing into stars.

3. Record-breaking supernova discovered

   Astronomers scanning the sky to make new discoveries in the universe have witnessed a record-breaking cosmic explosion about 200 times more powerful than a typical supernova - and more than twice as luminous as the previous record-holding supernova.

5. Galaxies are "wasteful" and retain fewer materials needed to build stars and planets, says new study

   Galaxies “waste” large amounts of heavy elements they generate via star formation by ejecting them up to a million light years away

6. A giant interstellar bubble being grown in the Andromeda Galaxy

   An international team of astrophysicists have uncovered an enormous bubble current being ‘blown’ by the regular eruptions from a binary star system within the Andromeda Galaxy.

7. Graduate Tutor Trainees join Positive Action Programme

   Six Graduate Tutor Trainees have begun a four-year programme at LJMU to gain invaluable teaching experience and strengthen the university's representation of Ethnically Diverse staff.

8. ARI creates simulation of the Universe with realistic galaxies

   An international team of astronomers, including Dr Rob Crain from the LJMU Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI), have developed a simulation of the Universe in which realistic galaxies are created. Astronomers can now use the results to study the development of galaxies from almost 14 billion years ago until now.

9. Brian May and Sam Davys named in New Year Honours List

   LJMU’s Honorary Fellow, Brian May and former JMSU President, Sam Davys, make 2023 Honours List.
