Professor Mike Riley has worked at LJMU for some 33 years and is the Director of the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment. He is passionate about giving students the tools they need to be the best that they can be in the world of building and construction.
Steven is a Client Systems Engineer with LJMU’s Information Technology Services. He started his career in Professional Services as an apprentice before eventually gaining a degree - the first person in his immediate family to do so. Andy Cooke has a distinguished policing career spanning more than 30 years, eventually seeing him taking on the highest role within Merseyside Police as Chief Constable. In 2023, he became a Bicentenary year honorary fellow in recognition of his outstanding achievements and the positive impact of his leadership in policing, both locally and nationally.
Malik Al Nasir is an author, poet and academic from Liverpool. From the age of 9 to 18 Malik grew up in care. By 18 he says he was left traumatised, semi-literate, homeless and destitute, many years later going on to successfully sue Liverpool City Council for neglect, racism and physical abuse.
Phil has worked at LJMU for over 16 years. He’s currently the Student Inclusion Lead within the Student Advice and Wellbeing Team and has recently started a new role as Diversity and Inclusion Associate Dean for Professional Services. Since 2010, Phil has also led on organising and representing LJMU at the annual Liverpool Pride March.
Elizabeth is the Head of Primary Programmes within the School of Education, and her own career in teaching brought her to work at the university. In 2023, she won a JMSU Student Experience Award, after being nominated as an outstanding teacher with students praising her for her support, empathy, and enthusiasm in all that she does.
Ibe founded Cycle for Life, a Toxteth based organisation that strives to ensure the community has a voice in the active travel revolution in Liverpool and the confidence to cycle in their city. Ibe and his team are getting support from LJMU’s Business School to now scale up their community-focused work and increase their social value.
Bert was a famous disability rights campaigner, himself a wheelchair user, dedicating his life to advocating for improvements to the daily life of those with disabilities. He was also an alumnus of the Liverpool Polytechnic, later becoming an Honorary Fellow and serving as a governor, while working closely with the university on its equality and diversity policies.
