Lisa McCleary is an Assistant Health and Safety Advisor working in the Safety, Health and Environment Team. She’s one of hundreds of unsung heroes at the university that ensure our campus is fit for purpose for its thousands of students and visitors, and she supports huge university-wide events like graduation every year.

In October 2023, Lisa celebrates 30 years at LJMU, having joined in 1993 on an initial 10-hour cleaning contract, which Lisa had decided she would leave after 12 months.

Lisa explains how she came about joining LJMU. “My mum worked for the catering team in the Mount Pleasant Building from 1989 to 1999, and I needed a job for additional funds for a family holiday – my parents 25th wedding anniversary. My mum got me the application form as the hours worked well around my husband’s job.”

“I have made great friends at the university.”

After deciding to stay after her initial 12 months, the rest is history you could say! Lisa has worked across different support services in the university across her 30-year career.

“I have progressed and moved around within the university, from the Estates team I went to work in the Student Medical Centre, which I loved and then moved into Health and Safety and work with a great team.”

Lisa says that the people at LJMU are what makes working here so special.

“I have made great friends at the university. When I worked in the Medical Centre, I loved having contact with the students, and now attending the graduation ceremonies every year for the past 20 years is a great way of celebrating with the students and meeting old colleagues.”
