Understanding Barriers to Academic Achievement of White British Male Students from Low Higher Education Participation Areas

This project, funded by the LJMU Diversity and Inclusion Team, investigated the experiences of white British male students from low higher education participation areas at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), variously referred to as first-in-family or working class, in the academic year 2023/24. The aim was to increase awareness among academic and professional services staff, and university leadership teams, about the unique challenges faced by these students, and to inform institutional policies, practices and interventions to support this underperforming group. The findings for the project, presented in the downloadable report, draw on 19 interviews with staff members, 1213 student questionnaire responses, and 42 students who engaged with exploratory workshops. The project contributes to developing a more inclusive and supportive learning environment at LJMU, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed.
