RCBB Research Seminar Series Talk - Prof Helen L. Ball (Durham University)
Changing co-sleeping conversations by reconsidering risks, benefits, and biology
This event has already taken place. In this RCBB Research Seminar Series talk, Prof Helen L. Ball (Durham University) will present her current research under the title "Changing co-sleeping conversations by reconsidering risks, benefits, and biology.".
The evolved biology of the mother-baby dyad predicts co-sleeping (bed-sharing) as a behavioural strategy to promote infant survival and reduce parent-infant conflict. The epidemiology of infant mortality implicates co-sleeping in increased risk for sudden infant death. Research at Durham’s Infancy and Sleep Centre has explored the nuances of night-time infant care in families for whom co-sleeping produces dramatically different outcomes, changing policy and practice in the UK.
