Educate North Awards 2016
LJMU won two categories at the Educate North Awards 2016 and was highly commended for another project.
The Astrophysics Research Institute, leaders on The Virgo Consortium EAGLE project, won Research Project of the Year and The Football Exchange at LJMU and Prozone Sports Ltd won the Commercial Engagement Award. The Jockey Research Group was also Highly Commended in the Research Project of the Year category. LJMU had also been shortlisted for University of the Year, alongside Newcastle University, the University of Sheffield, University of Chester and Lancaster University. Newcastle University claimed victory on the night.
The award-winning EAGLE is a project of the VIRGO Consortium, made up of researchers from UK, Germany, Holland, Canada and the USA, the goal of which is to carry out state-of-the-art cosmological simulations which help astrophysicists understand how galaxies form and evolve.
The Football Exchange won the Commercial Engagement Award for its work in enabling the football community to directly access the expertise of its world-leading staff and processes. LJMU have over the years successfully worked with many football organisations helping them with research, education and consultancy, including bespoke solutions.
Educate North is an initiative that aims to celebrate the success and growth of the knowledge sector across the North of England. It was established to recognise the huge economic and social contribution that the HE and FE sectors add to the North.
The event showcases best practice and the world-class status of many of the North’s leading HE institutions along with high level presentations and debate.
Dr Edward Harcourt, LJMU Pro Vice Chancellor (External Engagement), said: “This is the first time we have entered these awards and I am delighted that the University has walked away with three accolades. It is a fantastic achievement and credit goes to our academics who work tirelessly to produce outstanding research - these awards formally recognise their efforts.”
LJMU was also shortlisted for an additional five projects, demonstrating the University’s commitment to producing exceptional teaching, research and knowledge transfer:
- Student Experience Award - LJMU World of Work Careers Centre
- Employer Engagement Award - Employer Engagement Team at World of Work Careers Centre
- Research Project of the Year - Clinical research team of LJMU investigating black bone disease
- Leadership Award - Dr Zoe Knowles, Public Engagement Lead, School of Sport and Exercise Sciences
- University of the Year
