Research and Innovation Day Invites Entries to Scholarly Snaps Competition

Scholarly Snaps

Stoffel_StruggleOfLife

Can you creatively communicate your research to the general public with just one photograph, a snappy title and an accompanying short description? Can you capture their interest, raise their curiosity, or get them thinking about research in a different way?

As part of Liverpool John Moores University Research and Innovation Day, which takes place on Wednesday 19th June, we invite the research community (both staff and students) at LJMU to take part in the Images of Research Photography Competition 2019. We want you to inspire us with a single image of your work. This project aims to share the wonder and diversity of LJMU research activity and show how research makes a real difference.

Whether you work in the physical, medical, biological, social sciences, or the humanities we want you to share your work with the wider world.

We are seeking original photographs that encapsulate the theme “Scholarly Snaps”. We challenge you to pull back from the intimate and intricate details of your research and share the wonder, beauty and curiosity of what you do, why you do it, and how it matters to others.

The Prizes
Public vote: £150 gift voucher
Judges votes: First prize: £150 gift voucher | Runner up: £100 gift voucher | Highly commended: £50 gift voucher.

The judging criteria include evaluation of elements relating to both technical competence and creative interpretation.

How to Enter
Your piece can be anything that captures attention but must be related to your research. Be creative and interpret the call broadly. What are the outputs of your research and where are its effects felt? Can your image feature an individual, situation or event, perhaps a gadget? Entries should aim to raise the general public’s curiosity about the research issue that you are illustrating.

In addition to the original photographic image, each submission must include an (i) interesting title and (ii) a 150-word abstract describing how and why your research matters to others. Images should be emailed to a.f.williams@ljmu.ac.uk

The competition is free to enter and has a closing date of Wednesday 5th June 2019.

Selected entries will be exhibited at the culmination of Wednesday 19th June 2019 in Room 137 at Byrom Street where final judging will take place. Everyone who attends on this event will get a chance to participate in the Public Vote.
