Local LGBTQ+ group get a taste of LJMU
Local LGBTQ+ group get hands on at IM Marsh Food Kitchens.
During the recent half term holiday, LJMU Outreach were delighted to welcome back (for the third time this academic year) the GYRO LGBTQ+ youth group for a day of creative cooking at IM Marsh Campus.
Led by David Marsh, Senior Food Technican, the young people created a range of foods all aimed at being a healthy spin on what they may typically tuck into!
Coining it the 5 B's the young people made their own bread, butter, burgers and the delicious beetroot brownies, then sat round and enjoyed eating them together.
When asked what they enjoyed most about the day, the young people said:
" I liked trying new things that i didnt like before today"
" I enjoyed the fact that i was able to experiment with new recipes for everyday foods, also that i was able to be indepedent"
Paul and the staff from GYRO commented " It was fantastic! Trying new foods, making butter (!!) - it just blew our minds! It was great also hearing about the nutritional values of what we made. Thank you so much!"
GYRO is part of the Young Persons Advisory Service (YPAS) and supports young people aged 12 to 25 who are lesbian/gay/bisexual/trans or questioning. It is also the longest running LGBTQ+ youth group in the UK!
Catherine Shillito, Schools and Colleges Account Manager commented, " The relationship we have developed with Paul and the team at YPAS I believe to be very special. Many of the young people who engage struggle with confidence or may feel they don't belong in certain situations, to see them step out of their comfort zone and come together outside of the usual group setting is very comforting, particulary when we know they enjoy and gain a lot from the sessions. I am pleased to say we have already organised for the group to come back in the Summer to create t-shirts for Liverpool Pride, which will be led by LJMU Fashion".
