Challenging Racism Collaborative Campaign (FREE Webinar Series)

Liverpool John Moores University, University of Kent and City, University of London are collaborating in order to launch a series of cross-sector live webinars on race, racism and the importance of inclusive allyships.

Working in partnership with Inclusive Employers, the programme aims to open-up channels of discussion and reflection around racism as well as raise awareness and understanding of challenges associated with ethnicity/race.

Race & Racism Webinar Series:

As part of the Challenging Racism Collaborative Campaign, there will be an opportunity for staff to attend three 90min online webinars on the subject of race and racism, delivered by Inclusive Employers.

Webinar 1: The History of Race in the UK (2nd February 2021 - 10am)

Join us for this webinar looking at the history of race in the UK, including the UKs role in enslavement, the British Empire and the impact this legacy has had on the present day. We will be looking at:

  • A brief history of how and when Black people came to the UK; their experiences and rights
  • The effect of Britain’s history on today’s inequality
  • Why it’s important to understand Black British history

Webinar 2: White Privilege – What is it and how does it affect society? (18th March 2021- 12.30pm)

This webinar will discuss white privilege and privilege more broadly, incorporating how it affects our perspectives and behaviours. Some of the subjects we will cover are:

  • How does white privilege affect white and non-white people?
  • What can we do to change the privilege and power structures?
  • Inclusive actions we can all take in knowledge of the privileges we may hold

Webinar 3: Let’s Talk About Race (19th April 2021 - 1pm)

In our final webinar of the series we’ll be looking at why talking about race is difficult and why silence is so damaging to all of us. We will look at: 

  • Why we need to talk about race and the impact of silence on Black, Asian and ethnic minority people
  • Discuss what we can all do to encourage and improve conversations around race
  • Language and saying the ‘wrong’ thing
  • Top tips for starting conversations about race

Guest Speakers

Each webinar will be delivered by Inclusive Employers and will include a guest speaker.

During Webinar 1: The History of Race in the UK (2nd February 2021), participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear from Chantelle Lunt (Founder of Merseyside BLM Alliance).

 

 

 

 

Chantelle Lunt - Biography

Chantelle Lunt is a writer, public speaker, entrepreneur, and activist. She has a professional background in Public Service, including her work in policing and children’s social care. She owns a Juice bar and writes for independent publications. Chantelle is an advocate for racial equality, having experienced racism throughout her life, particularly during her service as a Police Officer. She is the founder of Merseyside BLM Alliance (MBLMA), a group which she established at a time when BLM was moving out of the news cycle.

Merseyside BLM Alliance has become one of the most proactive anti-racist groups in Merseyside. Chantelle chairs MBLMA’s sister group ‘Merseyside Alliance for Racial Equality’, a non-profit organization committed to ensuring that black people are not discriminated against and have their needs responded to at a community level.

Additional Opportunities... Inclusive Allyship Programme 

To coincide with the webinar series, there will also be an opportunity for a number of staff to participate in a four-part inclusive allyship programme, led by Inclusive Employers. The programme will take place over several weeks to allow for reflection and action between sessions. Each session will be one hour long
