Getting it Right when pronouncing someone's name

Our LJMU staff, students, and JMSU officers explaining how to pronounce their names.

Our LJMU community is made up of lots of people from different countries and cultures from around the world.

As part of our LJMU Equality’s ‘Getting it Right’ campaign, the team is highlighting the importance of pronouncing the names of different students and staff right.

Here's their tips when it comes to getting someone’s name right:

Introductions

Take notice of how a person pronounces their name

Made a mistake?

Accept the correction and say, “thankyou”

Ask

Ask them and make sure you practice the correct pronunciation from that point onwards

Don’t adapt names

Don’t adapt someone's name, practice it instead. Do this in advance to make sure everyone in our LJMU community feels valued
