Responsibilities during a fire alarm activation

A message to all staff from the Fire Safety Management Group:

When a fire alarm sounds, everyone has a part to play in the safe evacuation of people from a building.

Fire Wardens will check that people have left the building – but first you have a responsibility, when the fire alarm sounds, to ensure that everyone you are supervising, teaching or managing at that time leaves the building promptly and in a calm manner.

Everyone should leave the building on hearing the fire alarm. If you see a person who is having difficulty evacuating, please reassure them and let a Fire Warden or Fire Evacuation Coordinator know where the person is located. Everyone should then wait outside at the assembly point, until they are told that it is safe to re-enter the building.

Please make sure that you familiarise yourself with the various means of escape in the buildings you work in, along with the assembly points.
