Lock your screen: protect your data

Always lock your screen

At this time of year most students are working on assignments or using the LJMU libraries and study spaces. Remember it’s really important to always lock your screen before leaving your computer, especially in public and LJMU spaces, in order to protect your data.

We’re encouraging all our students and staff to look after their data and privacy online, not only to protect your own data but to ensure the university is not a victim of cyber crime.

Simple steps to look after your own data and digital wellbeing:

  1. Always lock your screen before leaving your computer (or don’t leave your unlocked computer unattended)

  1. Beware of scams and phishing emails – always think twice before clicking

  1. Create a strong password and don't use the same password for multiple accounts

Digital security wellbeing and awareness project by LJMU students

To raise awareness of protecting your data online, LJMU’s data protection team has worked with law, business and media production students to create a campaign across the university to highlight how to stay one step ahead of cyber crime. You may see a pesky seagull popping up on digital screens and around campus at events highlighting the tools and techniques you can use to keep your data safe.

To highlight the importance of having a strong password and not using the same ones for multiple accounts, students have created the video above.
