Restrictions on using USBs for students and staff

From 4 September students will be no longer able to use USB storage devices on LJMU equipment.

This is in response to cyber risks posed by USB storage and brings students in line with the policy which already affects staff. Students will be encouraged to use OneDrive to store their files.

Programme exemptions

There will be exemptions for programmes where such storage is necessary. If you feel this applies to your programme and students, please submit a Module USB Storage Exception under IT Services on the LJMU helpdesk.

Communications to students

As part of the transition process, messaging to students will instruct them to get in touch with the library help desk if they have any issues with the new USB’s restrictions policy.

Facilities will then be available for those needing an exemption, in Avril Robarts, Aldham Robarts and the Student Life Building, for students to transfer files from a USB to cloud-based storage.

Students should contact the Library directly if they have any issues with the USB restrictions and need help transferring files.
