World Mental Health Day: LJMU outlines commitment to mental health and suicide prevention

Thursday 10 October is World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day takes place this October and LJMU is raising awareness of all aspects of mental health and wellbeing, including suicide prevention, by outlining the support and resources available at the university for students and staff.

Zero suicide alliance training

Talking about mental health and particularly suicide is essential in keeping people safe. As part of the university’s recently published ‘Suicide Safer Framework’, which outlines our plans for prevention, intervention and, where required, post-vention, LJMU has launched the ‘Zero Suicide Alliance’ training, designed to empower individuals to start conversations, and where suicide is a risk, to sign post to relevant services.

Developed by Mersey Care NHS Trust, alongside Angela Samata (an LJMU Honorary Fellow who is an expert by experience) and LJMU students, the training takes just 20 minutes and could save a life.

Designed for students, staff and anyone working in higher education, you can complete the Zero Suicide Alliance Training here.

University Mental Health Charter

As part of LJMU’s commitment to mental health, the university has also signed up to the Student Minds Mental Health Charter. The charter will see LJMU continue to adopt a whole university wide approach to mental health and wellbeing to improve practice, policy and strategy across the university and work towards accreditation of the University Mental Health Charter Award.

Find out more about the Student Minds Mental Health Charter.

Mental Health Awareness if so important and days like World Mental Health Day allow us to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilise our efforts in supporting mental health for our students, staff and wider community.

We’ve signed up to the Student Minds University Mental Health Charter to ensure LJMU continues to adopt a whole-university approach to mental health and wellbeing and improve mental health support for students and the wider university community.
