November is Islamophobia Awareness Month
Islamophobia Awareness Month takes place every November and aims to raise awareness of Islamophobia.
This year’s Islamophobia Awareness Month theme is seeds of change
This year’s Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM) theme is ‘Seeds of Change’ with the goal of ‘emphasising how small actions can lead to big change. Whether it’s starting a conversation, challenging someone’s views, or something more, we can all plant a seed to help tackle Islamophobia’ and LJMU is supporting this.
The key aims of IAM are:
Relationships: To build strong relationships and educate a wide audience through training and resources.
Empowerment: To empower wide audiences to apply their learning and contribute to positive change.
Equality: To amplify Muslim voices within equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) practices.
Discussion: To encourage open discussion on topics related to IAMs mission.
Stereotypes : To provide a counter-narrative that challenges stereotypes of Muslims.
Events at LJMU this Islamophobia Awareness Month
Faith and Understanding: An Insight into Islam, Monday 25 November, 2pm to 4pm, online
As part of IAM, all students, staff and the wider community are invited to join LJMU at this online event ‘Faith and Understanding: An Insight into Islam’, with Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, Zara Mohammed.
The event aims to raise awareness of Islamophobia, encourage meaningful conversations, and promote a sense of belonging for everyone. The session will cover the topics, what is Islamophobia, why does Islamophobia occur, how can we combat Islamophobia and how can you be an active bystander.
The online event will be led by Zara Mohammed, who was elected as the youngest and first female Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain in January 2021 and was named in ‘100 Inspiring Muslims: Next Generation.’ Find out more and register for the event.
John Moores Students’ Union will also be hosting IAM events this November
