International tourism management students gain industry insight at airport visit

Second year International Tourism Management students were given a tour of Liverpool John Lennon Airport earlier this month to gain insight into the operational and strategic challenges of managing one of the fastest growing airports in Europe.

Robin Tudor, Head of PR and Communications, and Tom Woods, Digital Marketing Manager at the airport gave the students a behind-the-scenes look at the terminal building and shared how their digital marketing strategies are used to engage their customers and numerous stakeholders.

Dr Andy Lyon, a senior lecturer in Liverpool Business School, organised the tour as a way for his students to gain real-world insight into the tourism industry and how they can apply the knowledge they are learning during their studies into the workplace.

Andy said: “This was a great opportunity for our students to learn about all the different aspects of airport management and how Liverpool John Lennon Airport engage with their customers. This trip is one of many on the programme as the students learn about what makes Liverpool a great visitor destination.”

Student Rhiannon McKeown said: “My fellow classmates and I had the chance to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the airport, offering a glimpse into the complex operations that keep it running smoothly. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the engaging marketing talk delivered by Tom. His insights into the aviation industry's marketing tactics were not only enlightening but also relevant to my studies in tourism. I found the experience enjoyable and intriguing, gaining valuable knowledge about the intersection of tourism and the aviation sectors.”
