Cost of living: non repayable payments for students

Non-repayable financial support for students to help with energy bills, food and the cost of living

With three weeks to go until the final student loan payment of this academic year (for most of our students), money might be feeling tight. 

We’re reminding you of all the support available across the university from non-repayable payments, to help with your energy bills, to discounts and freebies across the university. 

Cost of Living Support 

Energy bills:  

If you are a student living in accommodation, on your own, or with flatmates, and are responsible for gas/electricity bills, you could each receive £250 to £500 in a one-off payment from the Student Support Fund. 

At this time of year, it’s unfortunately quite common that students living in accommodation may have unknowingly gone over their energy cap and get hit with a hefty bill from their landlord. Our Money Advice team can not only help you break down your bills and understand them but help you apply for a one-off payment, that you do not need to pay back, to ensure you can cover any outstanding money you owe.

‘Too Good To Go’ 

As part of our commitment to sustainability and helping with the cost of living, LJMU’s Core Cafes are listed on the 'Too Good to Go' app for students and staff, enabling you to grab a bag of short shelf-life food worth £12 for just £4.

Discounts across campus 

Don’t forget students still get 20% off in all Core Cafes on campus plus you can still join the gym for just £20 for the rest of the academic year until 31 August. 

Freebies and giveaways 

There are lots of freebies and giveaways going on through the semester on campus. From free lunches, to hygiene product giveaways. Keep an eye on the LJMU socials for further information. 

Student Support Fund 

Over the last academic year, LJMU has committed over 2 million pounds to students facing financial hardship during the cost-of-living crisis. 

The Money Advice Team can help any LJMU student facing financial hardship, with friendly advice and immediate assistance to cover food costs, bills, and give financial support.  

Last year we helped 2854 students with support averaging around £711 per application. 

Not only can the support fund help with gas and electricity bills, the fund helps to cover food costs and emergency assistance. You can also access free emergency supermarket vouchers by speaking to the money advice team. (opens in a new tab)
