Avoid money mule scams

As part of National Student Money Saving Week, there’s a warning to look out for money mule scams.

These are illegal practices through which someone lets other people use their bank account to transfer money and in return receive a quick cash payment.

It is a way for criminals to launder money which has been generated by criminal activity. Acting as a money mule is a serious crime and can carry a sentence of 14 years in prison.

What should I look out for?

  • Be cautious of job ads promising quick and easy money: Stick to reputable job sites and remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Always research any job opportunity before signing up: Check the legitimacy of the employer online and verify contact details, especially if they're overseas.
  • Avoid engaging with online offers promising large sums of money.
  • Don't accept friend requests from strangers, and verify any message with links from friends before clicking.
  • Never share your bank details with strangers, even among friends or family. Say no if someone asks to use your bank account.

Remember, if you're unsure about the source of money, you could unintentionally be involved in criminal activity and face legal consequences.

What should I do if I'm approached?

  • Remember if you or someone you know has been approached, break off all contact, don’t receive or move any money. Criminals operate in silence – by talking about it, you're protecting others.
  • Report it by calling local police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
  • Contact the HMRC Fraud Hotline by calling 0800 788 887 or online. Please quote ref: IFMM24. You do not have to give your name or contact details unless you want to.
  • Contact the independent charity CrimeStoppers 100% anonymously online at or by calling 0800 555 111. Please quote ref: IFMM24.
  • If you see it online, click the button to report it to the social media companies to get it taken down.
  • If you think someone you know is already involved, go to the NCA website for advice.
  • If criminals have already got your personal information report it to Action Fraud National Fraud & Cyber Crime Reporting Centre on 0300 123 2040.
