Book your place at journalism and EDI conference
LJMU's journalism department is hosting a free one-day conference on EDI in journalism education on Wednesday 26 June.
Although the conference is geared towards journalism education, it is open to educators from other subject areas who will be welcome to share their research and best practice as well as benefit from transferable, practical ideas around embedding EDI in teaching, learning and assessment and creating an inclusive environment for students.
The day will include:
- Jody Doherty-Cove, Head of Editorial AI at Newsquest, will be presenting a session discussing the inherent bias and lack of diversity in AI and the challenges this can pose within journalism
- Gurvinder Aujla-Sidhu, Associate Professor at the University of Derby, will deliver a workshop on actionable, practical steps lecturers can take when planning, delivering and assessment design to be inclusive and reflective of the students in the classroom, drawing on her work on decolonising journalism education
- Contributions from senior industry figures including Sunita Bhatti, head of regions at Channel 4 News, and Andy Thompson, Senior News Editor at Sky Sports News
- Papers from educators who will share their ideas and experiences of embedding EDI into journalism programmes. Topics will include inclusive diversity and assessment in sports journalism; access to work placements and resources to improve student confidence around inclusive reporting.
Attendance at the day is free, funded by LJMU’s Teaching and Learning Academy. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
The deadline for booking tickets is midnight on Tuesday 18 June. Book your place via Eventbrite.
