Induction September 2024 update

As the whole university looks towards the beginning of the next standard academic year, this all staff update offers an overview of the work being undertaken to register and welcome our new students.

Programme-level induction planning and guidance

Induction activities will take place from Monday 16 to Friday 20 September (week 0) for those students who are commencing their scheduled teaching on Monday 23 September (week 1).

Induction timetables

Induction timetables are now available for staff and students on the timetables platform. Student-facing information for programme and personal timetables can be found on the understanding your timetables' webpage

Teaching and Learning Academy guidance

The Teaching and Learning Academy has shared induction planning guidance for programme leaders, disseminated via the Head of Ops, to support the transition of students into the university and onto their chosen programme of study.

JMSU induction talk requests

JMSU is offering induction sessions of 15 to 30 minutes that can be scheduled into induction timetables, ensuring new students are aware of the range of opportunities to engage with the students’ union. Request a JMSU induction talk via email, please make your request by no later than Friday 16 August.

Residential induction for neurodiverse students

An enhancement project, led by our Associate Deans for Diversity and Inclusion across the university, is looking at hosting a series of residential pre-arrival inductions for neurodiverse students. These will take place from Tuesday 27 August through to Tuesday 6 September and work is ongoing to identify and invite applicants that would benefit from this opportunity. Additional web resources and signposting is also being developed to aid neurodiverse students at the start of their university journey.

Sustainability during induction

The Environmental Sustainability and Energy Team is reminding all staff to consider the sustainability of merchandise and materials that might need to be purchased for induction activities and to reduce waste and make sustainable choices during all induction events. Email the team for further advice.

Information being shared with our new students

Good luck postcards

Ahead of the UCAS embargo, good luck postcards have been posted to home undergraduate students with LJMU as their firm or insurance choice reminding them of the process to follow on results day along with details of both the confirmation and clearing hotlines.

Get LJMU Ready and JMSU guides

Those with the university as their firm choice have also received printed guides from LJMU and JMSU. The LJMU guide provides information on registration, moving in, induction week, and an introduction to our student support services, while the JMSU guide highlights freshers events and activities alongside an introduction to the student officers for 2024/25. Both guides will be sent to confirmed home undergraduate students after results day in a second mailout at the end of August, and international students will receive an edited version of the LJMU guide when they arrive on campus in September.

Registration, student timetables and student ID cards

Registry Services will begin their schedule of communications to new postgraduate and undergraduate students from Thursday 1 August. Their email, text and letter communications will equip new home and international students with their student ID numbers and instructions on completing their online registration and how to obtain their student ID card. Home students who register by Sunday 8 September will receive their student ID card in the post, along with a lanyard and campus map, and those who register after this date will be asked to collect their card on campus during the first few weeks of term at pop-up hubs like in 2023. International students will collect their student ID cards during their bespoke induction and welcome events in September which they will be contacted about directly in August.

Information about when and how to access timetables will also be shared as part of Registry Services’ communications. Induction week timetables will be available from Thursday 15 August, general programme timetables from Saturday 7 September and personal timetables from sometime in the week starting Monday 16 September (week 0).

Before You Arrive webpages and onboarding email newsletter

The Before You Arrive webpages have been updated again for September 2024 starters, acting as a central hub for information on registration, induction timetable guidance and a repository for other top-level information about the university that new students might need to know before they arrive on campus. On the webpages you can also access a digital version of the Get LJMU Ready guide 2024. Key information from these pages, along with information about freshers events, will be shared with new students in an onboarding email newsletter scheduled to be sent at the beginning of September.

JMSU-led welcome activities and Freshers Fair

Campus focus events

JMSU will host campus events throughout induction week each day between 11am and 3pm. Please note that they will not be offering campus tours, as their resource will be focused on the comprehensive welcome programme planned for students:

  • Monday 16 September - John Foster Building
  • Tuesday 17 September - Byrom Street
  • Wednesday 18 September - Student Life Building and Sport Building
  • Thursday 19 September - John Lennon Art & Design Building and Redmonds Building
  • Friday 20 September - Tithebarn Building and Education Building

The Freshers Fair

The Freshers Fair will take place on Friday 27 September at the Exhibition Centre from 10.30am to 5pm – the first 30 minutes of the day will be a designated quiet session. Similarly to last year, the fair will feature not only the JMSU stalls but also our own professional services to highlight the support that is available here at LJMU. JMSU will be in touch with colleagues soon about their requirements for stalls and questions can be emailed to the JMSU events team in the interim. There will be shuttle buses put on to transport students from our campuses to the Exhibition Centre and further information will be available about the times and pick up points later in the summer.

Update for staff exhibitors: Emails were issued on Monday 5 August by the university events team to last year’s professional services exhibitors at the Freshers Fair as coordination for this year’s event progresses with JMSU.

Other welcome activities

As well as the Freshers Fair and campus focus events, JMSU will have a full events schedule for students to book onto with both daytime and evening activities to take advantage of throughout the first weeks of term. Further details will be released on Thursday 15 August via the JMSU website with a specific microsite for freshers events, activities, support and FAQs.
