International students Saidah, Sara and Taha share their LJMU stories

Three international students who have studied at LJMU share their experiences and advice for new international students moving to the UK to start their studies in Liverpool this September.

Saidah: Finding my home away from home

Saidah Zubairu is a Nigerian student who has just completed her BSc in Public Health

Finding a community at LJMU

“During my time at LJMU I have been actively involved in various societies run by JMSU, the university’s Students’ Union. I have found such value in fostering a sense of community among international students through my role as President of the International Society. International students from all over the world can come together to form meaningful connections and lifelong friendships through the societies, it really has become a home away from home for me.”

Preparing for the world of work

My course at LJMU has prepared me for my future career in a number of ways. One of the most significant is the practical experience ingrained in my course. I participated in work-based learning and completed a three-month placement with the Public Health Institute which allowed me to gain valuable exposure to public health research and allowed me to work alongside my lecturers which was extremely valuable.

“The networking events put on by my module leader provided a great opportunity to interact and network with various professionals in the public health sector. A student was actually able to secure a graduate job from a networking event the university organised, so the opportunities provided are amazing.”

Making the most of this opportunity

“There are endless possibilities for exploration and personal growth, from joining new clubs and attending cultural events to exploring the city's historic landmarks and bustling nightlife. I encourage you to make the most of your time here by trying new things and stepping outside your comfort zone. University life is about more than just academic achievements; it's about creating unforgettable memories and embracing every experience that comes your way.

“So, go out, explore everything this wonderful place has to offer, step outside your comfort zone, and embrace every moment.”

Sara: Liverpool, the city of adventure

Sara Abanto Zamora is a third-year architecture student from Peru.

“What I love most about Liverpool is all the activities and opportunities it has to offer. If you are open to exploring and making new friends, there is always something to stumble upon. While there is so much going on like silent discos through the streets and jazz music pouring out of the bars on a Thursday night, I still find it very peaceful.”

Support available at LJMU

“There has been constant communication between the tutors and students during my time at LJMU, and I admire their dedication to creating a welcoming atmosphere where there is continued support and direction.

“I have felt supported in a number of different ways. First and foremost, from my tutors, through to the careers advice services where they helped me tailor my CV and apply for jobs, and being aware of the mental health support services that are available to students who may need it.”

Connecting with peers

“Connecting with other students through societies has helped me develop a sense of belonging. I found that student involvement is actively encouraged by LJMU’s teaching methods, as tutors will regularly encourage group discussion and activities within seminars. Our yearly student field trip also helps with bonding with my peers, as well as opportunities to see real-world examples of theorical subjects we have covered in class.”

Taha: Experience as an international ambassador

Taha Cheikhi is from Morocco and recently completed a master’s in cyber security.

Uni temps and working as an international ambassador

“Unitemps is one of the best initiatives put in place by LJMU, it has been an amazing experience working as an international ambassador which I secured through Unitemps, and I love the flexibility it provides. Unitemps is so effective in providing valuable employment opportunities to students.”

Reflecting on the course

“Our cyber security course places a strong emphasis on practical experience, in addition to theoretical principles. Through hands-on activities, we gain first-hand experience and deepen our understanding of the subject. For example, we engage in exploitation tasks like hacking, which allows us to apply what we have learned in a controlled manner. We also work in lab environments that closely resemble real-world networks, providing us with a realistic and immersive learning experience. These practical exercises are designed to prepare us for real-life scenarios we may encounter in our future careers, bridging the gap between theory and practice and ensuring we are well-equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.”

Settling into Liverpool

“I think Liverpool has got to be the best city in the UK, mainly because of how friendly everyone is here. My experience at LJMU and of living in Liverpool has been enriched by the genuine warmth and friendliness of its people, making my time here truly memorable. I felt welcomed as soon as I arrived, and I think if anyone was to move here, they would definitely feel at home.”
